2010-09-04 Owl Song News

Read a very interesting article about Owl Song at The Sydney Morning Herald. According to the article the movie is scheduled for release in 2012. The article also confirms once again, that JJ will play Stanley Bate, the husband of Peggy Glanville-Hicks, played by Neve Campbell.
There was a rumoured romance with the American violinist and conductor Yehudi Menuhin and a destructive marriage to the homosexual composer, Stanley Bate, to be played in the film by JJ Feild.
No information about, when they will start filming, but I guess it will be short after Neve Campbell has finished Scream? ( And JJ Captain America.....?)

Sadly the movie won't get a normal release in German cinemas, so it was great to get the chance to see it at the big screen at the Fantasy Filmfest ( and fortunately they didn't show a dubbed version). 2010-07-02 Third Star review @ Allbusiness.com

Read another Third Star review at Allbusiness.com.
Where the film does succeed is offering a fine platform for four talented young British actors - Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Burke, JJ Feild and newcomer Adam Robertson - as the group of lifetime friends who head off on an ill-advised trip to West Wales.
The friendships between the four men are nicely drawn, with Vaughan Sivell's script adroitly blending humour and pathos, though as the film draws on more emphasis is put on the relationship between James and Miles (JJ Feild), a late arrival to the outing and a man carrying a few secrets of his own.
2010-07-01 Third Star review at The OOH tray

Read a great Third Star review at The OOH tray.
Just when the piece begins to stray into the realms of melodrama, one of the characters, usually Miles, the straight-talking, cynical heart of Third Star, will relieve the emotional tension with a withering putdown. ‘It’s like going for a walk with a sick, white Oprah,’ he remarks during one of James’ outpourings.
2010-07-01 Third Star @ The Skinny

Read an interview with JJ, Tom Burke, Adam Robertson, Vaughan Sivell and Hattie Dalton at The Skinny.
It is doubtful the boys needed much encouragement in this area. Throughout the interview Feild and Burke share anecdotes and make fun of each other and it is precisely this natural rapport that makes the characters so enjoyable to watch, something that shines through in the final film. “We improvised some moments, and JJ would always rip the piss out of my character,” says Burke. “In real life I'd probably rip the piss out of him just as much but in character I'd absolutely clam up. I think that was to do with the actual character dynamic, rather than not being able to think of what to say.” Feild confirms this, “We were trying to shoot so many scenes each day, you just don't have time to sit on a chair doing a crossword between scenes, so you're just in character the whole time – and not in some intense method way, you just have no other option. So we really sparked off each other really quickly. We found our role and the dynamic worked, so you get four very different human beings on one journey together.”
2010-06-30 Third Star - more reviews

Read a Third Star review at Little White Lies.
Vaughn Sivell’s absorbing script flits between philosophical ruminations on the purpose of life and laddish banter effortlessly and is rendered believable by the strong performances of the young cast. Dalton captures the wild beauty of the British countryside admirably, packing the film with elegiac shots of roosting birds, the sun low in the sky glowing mournfully over the craggy Welsh coastline.
And many thanks at the Third Star Blog for posting a scan of the 4 star review from The Times!

2010-06-29 Third Star Review @ Casta La Vista

Read another brilliant Third Star review at Casta La Vista.
The core strength from which all others derive is the relationship between the four leads who solely occupy the largest part of Third Star’s all too brief ninety minutes. For the first time in a long time I felt like I was watching something completely genuine; the highs, the lows, the laughter, the tears, the arguments and the reconciliations all feel real – so much so that I wouldn’t be surprised to bump into any one of these characters whilst walking down the street.
2010-06-28 Third Star @ The List

Niki Boyle from The Edinburgh Festival Guide at TheList.co.uk has had the chance to attend the world premiere of Third Star on saturday and talk about the movie with JJ, Tom Burke, Adam Robertson, Vaughan Sivell and Hattie Dalton.
Field and Burke are equally mirthful when I interview them together. ‘I got the call that the film was closing the Edinburgh Film Festival, which I thought sounded quite bad,’ deadpans Burke, while JJ cracks up beside him. They end up describing each other’s characters, to avoid the risk of appearing self-serving in any way. ‘JJ plays Miles, who is closest to James, but is terrified of his illness, so he uses a lot of... what’s the phrase, trench humour?’ Burke asks. I suggest ‘gallows humour,’ which seems to be the right answer. ‘Ah yes, gallows humour – it’s trench foot I was thinking of. Right, so JJ has trench foot, he limps everywhere...’ The jokes subside again in time for JJ to discuss Tom’s character, Davy. ‘Tom’s character has been the closest to James through his battle with cancer, and he’s sacrificed everything to nurse him, both physically and emotionally. And my character feels threatened by that, and finds it somewhat disingenuous. So there’s a lot of friction. He’s also the best dressed, with the best facial hair,’ adds JJ, before the conversation descends into further silliness with discussion of 3D hair effects and green-screened eyes to be applied in post-production.
2010-06-28 Third Star review @ The Independent

Read a Third Star review at The Independent.co.uk, giving the movie 3 stars.
The acting is generally strong. J J Feild offers just the right measure of arrogance and vulnerability in his role as Miles, the alpha-male type who seems to get what he wants very easily (even if he can't fulfill himself as a writer.)
2010-06-27 Interview with Hattie Dalton @ ScreenDaily.com

Read a very interesting interview with Third Star director Hattie Dalton at ScreenDaily.com.
Just about everybody who read it wanted to do it which is testament to the strong material. In the casting, it was important to have really strong actors. For me, it was essential that I could believe in them as a group, playing these four friends who’ve been friends for years. It was probably more difficult for them as actors on the shoot than the journey of the actual boys in the story! It was a tough, tough shoot - all exteriors and a really short time, with long, hard days but they really mucked in. They encapsulated those characters and were in character most of the time.

Thankfully, Vaughan Sivelli’s fine screenplay skilfully avoids every potential trap, even having the character of Miles (JJ Feild) pour scorn on such hollow mawkishness. It’s coupled with four great lead performances – it’s easy to believe these four have really been friends for year – to make an immensely moving film.

Read another great Third Star review at Uncle Frank's Film Blog.

While the cast list is impressive, and Moran gets great performances from them all, Telstar is the Joe Meek show and it's a powerhouse performance from Con O'Neill as he brings this fascinating figure to life.
